Falling autumn leaves, in the manner of Waterhouse and Tennyson, James and Poe in this wistful piece with its bizarre instrumentation (harpsichord and piano) is itself a quasi-hallaucination of the image of the Lady of Shalott laying herself down to die.  To her boat she goes by the willow on the river, where expressionism mixes with folk medleys of memory and a plaintive bassoon lament…
